“…within an existing volume, we wanted to make an interior which would be cleanable, which would not acquire patina, which would stay fresh to the end of its projected lifespan.
To achieve this, we completely re-clad the cellar inside. The desire to keep it constantly fresh led to the idea of a clip-on interior, where any individual cladding element can be taken down and moved or replaced. There are no permanent surfaces. In 1987 this use of materials was very unusual and we received some heavy criticism – the traditional tendency in Vienna has been more towards disguising materials, treating them as a surface to be painted.“
